This is the last meeting of the Southside Art League for this year and the last one commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the league!
Troy Kilgore to provide the demonstration at the next Quarterly Pitch-In November 8th 11am - 1pm
Bloomington artist Troy Kilgore has been making headlines lately. In September he won Best of Show at the 2014 Carmel on Canvas plein air competition. Troy began painting with oils in 2002 and participated in his first plein air painting event in 2005. This spring he also won First Place at the 2014 First Brush of Spring plein air competition in New Harmony, Indiana.
Troy's accolades are not limited to plein air painting. He believes painting outdoors is essential to making larger studio paintings. In 2003 he turned part of his Bloomington home into an art studio. This is where he uses his outdoor field studies as reference for larger paintings. His studio paintings have won awards and been juried into many Hoosier art exhibits. This summer he won a Merit Award at the Indiana Heritage Arts Annual Exhibition in Nashville.
After many years of teaching himself to paint, he is now passing his knowledge along to others. Troy teaches art workshops in both plein air and studio painting. He believes that good drawing skills are essential to good painting. For our quarterly meeting he will demonstrate how to draw a charcoal portrait by using a technique similar to carving. After first laying in big shapes, he will erase areas to highlight the form. Much like a sculptor, he will take away in order to form his image.
Troy will be exhibiting some of his larger works at the Hoosier Salon Gallery in New Harmony along with Bloomfield native Wyatt LeGrand and Roy Boswell of Franklin from October 17 - November 20, 2014.
